Achille
Espresso ritual, transformed.
Materials: Recontextualized Portafilter, 304 Stainless Steel, Beechwood
Dimensions: 135×100×140mm
Weight: 0.37kg
Designed in 2025
The assembly centers on a professional espresso portafilter. The steel housing is secured to a custom pylon by a single titanium screw in warm gold. The industrial character is retained, but the purpose shifts: a cigar ashtray is formed.
To balance the coldness of stainless steel, a beechwood rod is introduced as part of the footing. This timber element provides tactile warmth—a physical pivot for the object's footprint.
At the summit of the steel pylon, a welded groove cradles a cigar. The portafilter's dosing cup becomes the ash chamber, with a filter basket acting as a lid. Outdoors, it keeps ash from scattering in the wind.
The form is a reference to Achille Castiglioni's 1957 Mezzadro stool—a tractor seat mounted on a cantilevered stem. Hence the name.
